Let’s learn about Space Force!

Do you know what Space Force is? Well, Space Force is a branch of the military that protects our country in space! This is my favorite branch of the military.

I interviewed a member of Space Force named Jorge, enjoy reading his answers to my four questions:

1. What is your job like at Space Force?

“As the newest military service, we turn five years old this December, our job is to make sure we protect the satellites we own in space and protect their support to the mission of the other services; Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.  In my job, I work to ensure we can defend from enemy attacks in space, and must continue to understand what the enemy is building and what that can do to us.”

2. How did you became a Space Force member?

“After I graduated from the Air Force Academy, I served 10 years in the Air Force, which I really loved.  When the Space Force was established, I quickly applied for the opportunity to be able to shape a brand new military service. The Space Force seemed like the next boundary that pushed our technology, much like the Air Force was in the 1940s.”

3. What is your favorite part of the job?

“That I get to work on systems that allow our men and women fight in war with everything they need.  From providing GPS that lets the planes know where to go, to Communication capabilities which allow all our troops and systems to talk to each other, to weather information allowing our troops, ships, and planes make a decision of when and where to fight, and we provide in-theater warning letting our troops know when any missiles or rockets are fired against them.”

4. Did you train like an astronaut?

“Astronauts are very smart people who excelled in their careers as either Pilots, in STEM, or medicine.  The military that are selected to be astronauts have to meet all the military fitness and education standards then go and do more training specific to doing missions in space. While this would be a great privilege, I am not in a path to be an astronaut.”

WOW! Thank you, Jorge, for teaching us about Space Force. I want to be a Space Force member like you one day, not an astronaut. The Space Force is way cooler.
